Lakers: Damian Jones Shows What He Can Bring to Los Angeles

We’ll forgive you if the name Damian Jones doesn’t immediately ring a bell, but it might be a good idea to remember it going forward. The journeyman center was signed by the Lakers to a 10-Day contract last week, and he finally had an opportunity to show fans what he can offer.

In Sunday’s blowout win against the Golden State Warriors, Jones saw his first minutes in a Lakers uniform and made the most of it. With Anthony Davis still nursing an Achilles injury, this team has desperately lacked size and athleticism: two things that Jones provides.

The perfect example came late in the third quarter on his first bucket with the team.

Besides Davis, there is no one on the Lakers with the kind of bounce that Damian Jones possesses. And while his shooting stroke outside of the paint may be a bit suspect, he was an efficient 3 for 3 on the night en route to 8 points in 8 minutes played.

Perhaps the biggest asset that he brings, however, is his defense. Not only can Jones block shots with ease, he has the ability to shuffle his feet and stay low to the ground on defensive possessions. He was able to put on a defensive clinic to close out the third quarter, showcasing all of the mentioned skills and more.

Jones is by no means a perfect player. He could use some work on defensive rotations and his ability to read an offense is still progressing, but those are things that take time to develop. If the Lakers decide to cut him after his 10-Day contract is up, they will still be one of the best teams in the league. But should they sign him for the remainder of the season, they may have found yet another diamond in the rough to play a small but important role on a contender.
