Dodgers News: Vin Scully Voted Biggest Icon in Los Angeles Sports History

Los Angeles has been home to countless superstars across every sport. Yet no personality stood out to LA Times readers more than the Dodgers’ legendary broadcaster, Vin Scully. Vin, someone who never played professional sports, was voted as the biggest icon in LA Sports History.

The LA Times held a tournament among its readers and social media followers, aimed at crowning LA’s largest sports personality. The competition was similar to a March Madness bracket, with different sports making up the regions (baseball, basketball, football, and wild card). After breezing through the baseball bracket, Scully found himself facing Laker legend, Magic Johnson, in the finals. One would think that this matchup would favor the athlete, someone who actually brought titles to the city of LA. Instead, we saw just how big of an impact Scully has had on all our lives. He won the title with ease, bringing in 62.1% of the votes compared to Magic’s 37.9%. In total, more than 45,000 cast a vote for the final two.

There has never been anything flashy about Vin, just good old fashioned love of the game. After starting his broadcasting career with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1950, Scully followed the team across the country to LA, where he really left his mark. He has been there for so many incredible moments in Dodgers’ history: calling a record 20 No-Hitters, 3 perfect games, and was with the team for a record 65 seasons before retiring in 2016. There’s no question that Scully has left his mark on the city, even to this day. He now has one more title to add to his resume: the biggest icon in Los Angeles Sports of all time.
