Dodgers News: 7-Inning Doubleheaders Would Give Dodgers Advantage

Major League Baseball has thrown around dozens of proposals on how to restart the season. One of these proposals involved playing 7-inning doubleheaders as a way to make up the 162 games. While this is definitely a radical proposal, it would definitely play to the Dodgers’ strengths if it came to fruition.

How the Dodgers Would Benefit

The Dodgers have been known for their starting pitching during this current string of division titles and playoff appearances. 2020 was set to be more of the same, I mean just take a look at their starting pitching depth: Clayton Kershaw, Walker Buehler, David Price, Julio Urias, Alex Wood, Ross Stripling, Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin, Jimmy Nelson, Caleb Ferguson, and Dennis Santana. That’s 11 solid starters that any team would love to have.

A starting pitcher would usually have to go 6 or 7 innings to have a “good” outing, but in this scenario, even 5 solid innings would be enough to get the job done. That leaves only 6 outs for the bullpen to get, which should be no problem. The Dodgers are just as deep in their bullpen as their starting rotation, making this proposal a perfect fit for them. For a team like LA, with so much depth at the pitcher’s spot, this scenario would play to their strengths and allow them to keep guys fresh while also throwing out a capable starter each game.

What Needs to Happen in Order for this to Work

If this proposal is indeed under serious consideration, a couple of things need to happen in order for it to be feasible:

  • Governments need to allow teams to reconvene for a shortened spring training
  • MLB needs to decide on a location/s to play their games
  • The 26-man roster must be expanded to allow for more player rest(possible taxi squad)
  • Teams need to buy the idea

There are many more steps that need to be taken before we can see baseball return, but these four are key in making it a reality.

MLB has been adamant about trying to squeeze in as many games as possible this season. Not only is it important for their revenue streams, since ticket sales will likely not be a source of income, but it will help make the season feel less like a fluke. Baseball already has at least one title in the past few years that should have an asterisk next to it and they don’t want to add another.  Playing close to 162 games, even if it’s shortened 7-inning affairs, would help the season feel more complete.
