USC Freshman Volleyball Sensation London Wijay Shines in Recent Victories
London Wijay Named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week after Impressive Performances
Freshman USC women’s volleyball offensive hitter London Wijay is already making a major impression on her new environs, per a USC presser.
An alum of Bishop Alemany High School in Porter Ranch, the 5’10” first-year standout was honored as the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for September 11th-17th, per a Pac-12 conference decree on Monday.
Wijay’s productive week included victories against Big Ten powerhouses the University of Illinois (the Women of Troy won 3-2) and No. 17-ranked Purdue University (USC won 3-1). She notched six digs and four kills against the Fighting Illini, and actually started against the Boilermakers, where she logged 18 kills and 12 digs in the first double-double of her NCAA run.
Wijay converted her hits at a .262 rate and averaged 4.5 kps in that Purdue matchup. Her prolific week at Purdue’s annual Boilermaker Challenge helped move USC significantly over a .500 record, 6-4.
The Women of Troy next suit up against crosstown Pac-12 (soon-to-be-Big Ten, of course) Conference nemesis UCLA, currently 8-2 on its own young season. The press statement notes that this marks the 22nd occasion that the Women of Troy have been awarded with some freshman plaudits. It appears the program has recruited another winner right in its backyard.
