Your USC women’s volleyball team has kicked off the 2023 season with a bang, securing a significant victory over the University of Southern Mississippi. After encountering a couple of initial hurdles in Houston, the team showcased their strength and teamwork against Southern Mississippi, claiming victory in all three sets of the match.
Ranked at number 22 in the nation for this season, the Women of Troy brought a mix of fresh faces and experienced returners to the court. Despite facing defeats in their first two matches in Houston, they rallied together to deliver an exceptional performance against Southern Mississippi.
Leading the charge was senior Skylar Fields, who demonstrated her prowess by contributing 17 kills, nine digs, and two blocks, boasting an impressive .424 hitting average. The match held special significance for Fields as she made her triumphant return to her hometown of Houston, capitalizing on the opportunity to shine on familiar turf.
Joining Fields in their winning effort were junior Mia Tuaniga and senior Lindsey Miller. Tuaniga’s contributions included 30 assists and two blocks, while Miller made her presence felt with six blocks and five kills.
Looking ahead, the Women of Troy are set to take on the University of Hawaii twice in the coming week, scheduled for August 31 and September 2. These challenging away games form part of a demanding early-season schedule. With this initial victory under their belts, the team aims to further solidify their position and achieve a record above .500.
