The Olympian won the all-around thanks to her perfect score on floor that rounded out the Bruins’ victory.
The Bruins’ star sophomore posted a perfect 10 on floor, but she did a lot more than that to lift the Bruins to a win.
No. 6 UCLA gymnastics fended off No. 20 Arizona State at Pauley Pavilion on Saturday, riding Jordan Chiles’ all-around win to a 197.800-196.900 victory. Chiles posted a career-high 39.825 in the all-around, capping it off with a perfect score in the final rotation.
Chiles overall performance was good enough to rank No. 6 in program history, and it is the highest all-around score by a UCLA gymnast since Kyla Ross had an identical score on Feb. 23, 2020.
The Bruins started slow, however, trailing by 0.300 through one rotation. Redshirt senior Margzetta Frazier led off vault with a 9.775, with freshman Maddie Anyimi posting a 9.725 and sophomore Emily Lee scoring a 9.750.
Junior Chae Campbell stepped things up with a 9.850, only for freshman Selena Harris to put up a 9.800. Chiles anchored with a 9.950, starting her big day on the right note.
UCLA exploded on bars to make up for a lackluster opening rotation, following up Campbell’s 9.850 and senior Kalyany Steele’s 9.825 with four straight scores of 9.900 or better.
Sophomore Ana Padurariu came through with a 9.900, then Harris posted a 9.950 and Chiles was a split decision away from a perfect 10 with a 9.975. After Frazier finished the rotation with another 9.900, the Bruins led the Sun Devils 98.700-98.550.
Lee led off beam with a 9.900, followed by freshman Ciena Alipio earning a 9.800. Chiles’ 9.900 set the table for Harris’ 9.950, and sophomore Emma Malabuyo rounded things out with a 9.850.
Arizona State was still only 0.225 behind UCLA, but the Bruins made sure the Sun Devils didn’t have a chance to stage a comeback by going all out on floor.
Lee posted another leadoff 9.900, which Malabuyo matched one turn later. Harris’ 9.875 was the low score, as Frazier nailed a 9.950, Chiles got her perfect 10 and Campbell scored a 9.925.
UCLA has another Pac-12 dual meet next Saturday against Cal in Berkeley, with the start time set for 2 p.m.
