The Los Angeles Rams have proposed a major rule change to the NFL Competition Committee on Sunday, that if passed, could have a serious impact on the game, according to reports from NFL.com.
The proposed idea would make roughing the passer a reviewable penalty by officials.
Roughing the passer, of course, is a penalty that has generated extreme amounts of ire from fans and media alike in recent seasons, and has on many occasions affected the outcomes of wins and losses directly.
The rule change was proposed by Los Angeles at the Committee’s meetings on Sunday in Indianapolis, just before the NFL Scouting Combine.
According to the report, the rule seems unlikely to pass, with the committee reviewing more than 80 plays that were called roughing the passer, and finding only three questionable penalty flags thrown.
Per NFLPenalties.com, 93 roughing-the-passer penalties were called in 2022, with only three being dismissed, accounting for 1,234 total penalty yards.
The Rams were one of three teams in the NFL that did not have a roughing the passer penalty called against them last season. Though they did benefit from the call three times.
The Committee is set to review the penalty again on Monday, with a vote potentially coming during the NFL’s annual meetings in March.
