Colts to Hire Eagles Shane Steichen, Raheem Morris Staying With Rams?

After interviewing for multiple jobs this offseason, Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris seems primed to return to Los Angeles

Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris has been a top candidate for multiple head coaching positions this offseason, including most recently with the Indianapolis Colts.

However, according to reports, the Colts are now targeting Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator, Shane Steichen for the position.

And should Steichen indeed finalize that deal, the only remaining head coaching opening in the league would be with the Arizona Cardinals, who are reportedly zeroing in on another Eagles assistant – Jonathan Gannon.

So what does this mean for Morris? Likely that he will be staying put in Los Angeles through the 2023 season.

Morris came to the Rams in 2021 after spending five seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, where he began as the assistant head coach and pass game coordinator under now-Cowboys defensive Dan Quinn, who at one point competed with Morris for the Denver Broncos job.

That job eventually went to Sean Payton.

Morris was then elevated to the defensive coordinator position in 2020, and eventually took over as the interim head coach when Quinn was fired after an 0-5 start to the season, going 4-7 for the remainder of the year.

Should Morris win the job, it would not be his first stab at being a true head coach, either, with the 46-year-old occupying the position for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009-2011.

He was then fired after a 17-31 tenure.

However, by all accounts, Morris has learned a great deal since his first attempt at being a head coach and has developed into one of the NFL’s most coveted defensive minds.

And despite missing out on multiple head coaching opportunities in this cycle, it still appears he won’t remain a defensive coordinator for long.
