‘Chess Match’: Bobby Wagner to Face Former Teammate Russell Wilson

The Los Angeles Rams are looking forward to the “chess match” between linebacker Bobby Wagner and Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson.

Los Angeles Rams linebacker Bobby Wagner has already had two “reunion” games this year, facing his former team and division rival of the Rams, the Seattle Seahawks, twice. The veteran is now set for a third reunion, this time not with a former team but rather with an old teammate.

Wagner and Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson played together in Seattle for 10 years. The pairing, while never playing on the same side of the ball, are undoubtedly familiar with each other and potentially could bring info to their new teams on the other, making it a “chess match,” as Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris called it.

“When I get a chance to sit down with Bobby close to close, I’ll get some [information] out of him,” Raheem Morris said. “But Bobby definitely knows Russell probably as well as anybody, what he’s capable of doing, what he’s capable of not doing, some of the things that he can offer to us as far as how to play him, some of the things he doesn’t like, and all those types of things.”

Just like his mindset against the Seahawks, Wagner is not getting too caught up in the emotions.

“I think it’s going to be an upgraded version of practice,” Wagner said on playing Wilson. “I think with practice, everything was pretty much live in the checks and the going back and forth, all of that was full speed, but the hitting wasn’t. You could never touch him. He said I would never catch him, so we’ll see.”

The season has not gone as expected for either of the two former teammates; both joined their respective teams hoping to win another Super Bowl. Yet, both sides have fallen well short.

The Rams will host the Broncos inside SoFi stadium on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. (PT) for a Christmas Day matchup.
