Rams News: CBS Sports Ranks Sean McVay One Of NFL’s Top 10 Head Coaches

Over the last couple of weeks, CBS Sports decided to rank today’s NFL coaches. Giving 10 spots for the best ones (obviously). L.A. Rams’ Sean McVay was listed in the top 10, but his rank may surprise some.

McVay was ranked at number 6, which to many seems highly underrated. Let’s take a look at his career coaching stats, shall we?

Regular Season: 33-15 (.688)
Postseason: 2-2 (.500)

We all know 2019 wasn’t the best season for McVay and the Rams, but you got to remember to put the past behind you. Let’s not forget that McVay was brought in as the HC as age 30, and went 24-8 in his first 2 seasons! That’s pretty good when you factor that both those years the Rams made the playoffs and a Super Bowl trip.

So after 3 seasons, McVay is now 33-15. The only reason he was ranked so low was due to the disappointing 2019 season. Yeah, we get it, wasn’t the plan the Rams had I’m sure. When you look at the others on the list (which you’ll be reading shortly) McVay is ranked high because of his win percentage of 68.8. We’ll just say 2019 was a “learning experience” season for now.

When trying to explain why McVay was ranked so high, CBS’s NFL columnist Sean Wagner-McGough had this to say:

“McVay, hired at the age of 30, went 24-8 in his first two seasons with two playoff appearances and a trip to the Super Bowl. His disappointing 2019 season still included nine wins, which means his record after three seasons is 33-15, which means his winning percentage is 68.8. Obviously, given his relative inexperience, there’s a sample size problem that’ll get sorted out in due time, but it’s worth noting that he has a higher winning percentage than every single coach on this list. That’s why he’s ranked this high.”

The 2020 season already looks to be very different due to the pandemic. It’s anyone’s season really. The Rams have the stuff to get them back into Super Bowl form. McVay’s record proves it for being still very young in the game.

The rest of the list can be found here if you’re interested.

The L.A. Rams are scheduled to take on the Dallas Cowboys in their home opener on September 13th in their new SoFi Stadium shared arena. Hopefully, that still happens with all the safety measures going on due to the pandemic. Cross fingers.
