Rams News: With An Inexperienced Backup QB, Should LA Take A Chance On Colin Kaepernick?

The Los Angeles Rams may not be in a full-fledged “rebuilding” stage, but it sure feels like it after the sudden release of both Todd Gurley and Clay Matthews. As a Rams fan, it does hurt to make such drastic changes so quickly since they were just at the Superbowl in 2019.

With drastic roster changes come lines that can or can’t help the team be better. So far the Rams have brought back guard Austin Blythe, defensive back Dont’e Deayon, signed kickers Austin MacGinnis and Lirim Hajrullahu, defensive linemen Morgan Fox, and brought in a plethora of draftees.

Rams have also given the boot to other players besides Gurley and Matthews as well. Wide receiver JoJo Natson, DB Nickell Robey-Coleman, LB Jeff Holland , DL Tanzel Smart all got the horns. Annnnd they traded Brandin Cooks to the Texans. Geez.

One small issue that seems to be hiding under the radar is the QB dilemma. Now, don’t get me wrong, Goff looks to be coming off a pretty mediocre 2019 season. His completion rate went down to about 62.9%, and total yardage (4,638) is just tad lower than what it was in 2018. Why the issue at QB you say? Well, it’s honestly in the backup role that an issue lays.

The backup QB is looking to be John Wolford. Now let’s face it, he doesn’t feel very trusting in case Goff gets injured. Wolford has zero, yes ZERO NFL experience, and the only professional time he’s seen is when he was in the Alliance of American Football. Yikes. Wolford played four seasons at Wake Forest as a dual-threat quarterback. He stands 6-feet-1 weighing 200 pounds.

Can we fully trust a guy who hasn’t taken one snap in an NFL game? I don’t feel very confident about it, so maybe the Rams should look elsewhere for help. Say, Colin Kaepernick?

It would make sense for the Rams, let alone any team, to see what Kaepernick can do still. That and the Rams just opened up a lot of cap space from all the trades and releases. Bringing in Kaepernick would be an inexpensive option if you think about it. Cam Newton is still available, but he already let teams know that he’s not looking to play the backup role. So there’s that.

Although we haven’t seen Kaepernick play since the 2016 season, and yes all the drama from the kneeling and all the back and forth political mumbo jumbo, he can be valuable in a backup role. For many, it will be very hard to ignore all the past issues and move on. I believe it’s time to move forward and get back to the game.

Having the Rams bring in Kaepernick would fit in with LA. Not only as a veteran player who can help with the youth but also a great advocate of what the world is going through today. I wouldn’t mind seeing Kap suit up in LA, and would definitely trust him way more as a replacement QB. Will it happen? Doubtful, but anything could happen. I mean, look at our new logo. Ugh.
