Lakers Legend Derek Fisher Joins Encino High School Coaching Staff

Former NBA Guard Begins New Chapter as Coach for Upcoming Season

A pivotal figure in the Lakers’ championship reign during the 2000s, a legendary Laker has once again embraced the coaching role after a brief hiatus. Derek Fisher, a former guard and NBA head coach, has embarked on a fresh chapter in his career, securing a coaching position at Encino High School for the upcoming season.

Derek Fisher’s basketball journey began on the courts of his hometown in Arkansas, much akin to the current Lakers guard Austin Reaves. His path mirrored Reaves’, leading Fisher to a four-year stint at Little Rock University. His collegiate journey culminated in being named the Sun Belt Conference’s Player of the Year in 1996 during his senior year.

Selected in the first round of the 1996 draft, Fisher’s destiny aligned with the Lakers, and he swiftly formed a formidable partnership with Kobe Bryant, the esteemed Lakers legend. Together, they ventured to Los Angeles on draft night and embarked on a remarkable journey.

While initially a reserve player during his initial six seasons, Fisher was a crucial component in the Lakers’ triumphant years, securing three consecutive championship rings alongside the iconic duo of Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. This period marked one of the NBA’s most celebrated dynasties.

The 2002-03 season marked a turning point as Fisher’s role transitioned to a consistent starter for the Lakers, a trend that persisted even when he donned jerseys outside the purple and gold.

Following stints with the Warriors and Jazz, Fisher eventually returned to the Lakers, assuming the role of the team’s starting point guard in the post-Shaq era. His second tenure with the Lakers proved equally fruitful, featuring three consecutive Finals appearances, including two victories that contributed to his impressive collection of five championship rings.

Although his quest for a sixth championship fell short with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Dallas Mavericks, Fisher swiftly transitioned to the realm of coaching, taking the helm for both the Knicks and more recently, the LA Sparks.

This new coaching journey marks the next phase in Fisher’s career, paralleling the milestones achieved by his former Lakers teammates during the recent offseason. As he embarks on this endeavor, we extend our best wishes to Derek Fisher, as he forges a new legacy, extending beyond his illustrious tenure in the purple and gold.
