Lakers News: LeBron James Get Candid About Constrictions Of Fame

He’s been adorning magazine covers since he was 17 years old.

Tania Ganguli of The New York Times spoke with 19-time Los Angeles Lakers All-Star forward LeBron James about his feelings regarding his record-setting 20-year (and counting) NBA career, during the days leading up to his surpassing longtime Lakers center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time regular season scoring record.

“Hopefully I made an impact enough so people appreciate what I did, and still appreciate what I did off the floor as well, even when I’m done,” James told Ganguli. “But I don’t live for that. I live for my family, for my friends and my community that needs that voice.”

James, 38, then touched on the trappings of his being an internationally famous figure, which he now has been for the majority of his life.

“I don’t want to say it ever becomes too much, but there are times when I wish I could do normal thing… I wish I could just walk outside,” James reflected in a moment of candor that yours truly was not expecting, at least. “I wish I could just, like, walk into a movie theatre and sit down and go to the concession stand and get popcorn. I wish I could just go to an amusement park just like regular people. I wish I could go to Target sometimes and walk into Starbucks and have my name on the cup just like regular people… I’m not sitting here complaining about it, of course not. But it can be challenging at times.”

Trust us, LeBron, you’re really not missing much at Target.
