Lakers Remain Atop NBA Power Rankings as Clippers Fall Out of Top 5

The reigning champs have gotten off to a hot start this season, although the games certainly haven’t felt that way. The truth is that the Lakers are still looking for their chemistry, but that hasn’t stopped them from having the best record in the NBA thus far.

In the NBA’s most recent Power Rankings, the Lakers hold the top spot once again, a title that they have not given up this season. They have certainly tested their luck, however, having played numerous close games of late.

Their lone loss of the week against the Spurs was their worst performance of the year, giving up 118 points after having one of the league’s top defenses through the first three weeks. But after a similarly poor performance against the Bulls that almost cost them another win, they came out focused against the Rockets last night to show what they can do when they have the right mindset.

While they still hold on to the number one spot, there is another Western Conference team that has been on a tear to start the year and could be on the verge of dethroning them.

NBA.com’s Top 5 Power Rankings

  1. Los Angeles Lakers
  2. Phoenix Suns (+2)
  3. Boston Celtics (+3)
  4. Milwaukee Bucks (+3)
  5. Philadelphia 76’ers (-3)

Next 5: Clippers, Pacers, Mavericks, Nuggets, and Warriors

The Suns have been the surprise of the league after acquiring Chris Paul during the offseason. The veteran guard has helped them become a serious contender seemingly overnight, and his leadership has been just as important as his play.

The Clippers, on the other hand, have not played to their full potential and slipped out of the top 5 after losing 3 of their first 6 games in 2021.

As for the Lakers, their ability to win games without full effort may be tested during the coming week. With matchups against Houston, Oklahoma City, and New Orleans, they will have to be more consistent if they wish to enter next week on top once again.
