Galaxy News: LA Hires Greg Vanney as New Head Coach

It’s been speculated for weeks that LA Galaxy and former Galaxy defender Greg Vanney were working on a deal that would bring him back to lead the team once again. However, his role would look much different this time around as it would be from the sidelines instead of on the field. That speculation officially came true Tuesday morning as Los Angeles released a video via social media announcing Vanney’s hiring.

Vanney spent seven seasons with Galaxy where he was named to the MLS Best XI twice during that time. He has spent the past six years as the head coach of Toronto FC. There he turned a struggling football club into a championship team. He was also named CONCACAF Coach of the YEAR and MLS Coach of the Year in 2017 for his work on turning Toronto around.

His rebuilding project experience will be tested as he has the honor of helping out the team that started his career. Vanney spoke to the media on that challenge.

“The Galaxy is the most important club in MLS, and it’s our job to get this club back to where people expect it to be. And I love that challenge. I love this opportunity to put those pieces back together in the right way.”

With stars such as Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez or Jonathan dos Santos as well as rising stars, Vanney will have no shortage of talent available. However, with the team looking at a rebuild and with only 13 players under contract for the upcoming 2021 season, he’ll have his hands full.
