Dodgers’ Yency Almonte Nears Comeback for Potential Playoff Role

Injured Dodgers reliever Yency Almonte eyes postseason redemption as he progresses in rehab.

Among the current Dodgers nursing injuries, one reliever, Yency Almonte, could become a crucial postseason asset for Dave Roberts, the team’s manager. After being sidelined for the past month due to a knee injury, Almonte is steadily progressing in his rehabilitation, though he remains cautious about declaring himself fully recovered. This development raises hope for the Dodgers as they look toward the October playoffs.

In 2022, Almonte delivered an exceptional performance, but his 2023 season took a different turn, with his ERA skyrocketing from an impressive 1.02 to over 5 before his injury last month. The turning point occurred during a game against the Rockies in August when Almonte was just one pitch away from sealing the victory before sustaining an injury.

Unable to secure the final out, Almonte had to be assisted off the field by a trainer. Subsequent examination revealed that he had strained his MCL, necessitating a period of recovery. While he has since undergone a bullpen session, the Dodgers are understandably cautious and will not rush the right-handed pitcher back into action until he is confirmed to be 100% ready to face major league hitters once more.

The Dodgers have faced their share of bullpen challenges this season, with Joe Kelly recently returning from an elbow issue. However, other key bullpen options, including Daniel Hudson and Blake Treinen, are unlikely to make a comeback this season. This rash of injuries has forced Dave Roberts to explore uncharted territory, leaning on rookie pitchers such as Kyle Hurt, recently called up from the minor leagues.

Hurt was demoted to make room for Kelly after a promising MLB debut, highlighting the unprecedented measures Roberts has had to take as he navigates the team’s pitching situation on the fly in preparation for the postseason.

As the regular season inches closer to its conclusion, Yency Almonte’s health and potential return loom as pivotal factors for Dave Roberts. Should Almonte successfully complete his recovery and remain healthy through the remainder of the regular season, the question of his role in the postseason becomes increasingly intriguing as the calendar turns to October baseball.
