Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Talks Opening Day Roster, Keeping an Open Mind

Dodgers skipper sees no limitations for multiple of his players

Baseball is in the air, and your Los Angeles Dodgers will look to capture another illustrious title. Spring Training is in full swing, and Opening Day is a little over a month away for the Boys in Blue.

Even though the team is set, there are still a ton of questions that need to be answered. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spoke with the media before Sundays exhibition game against the Chicago Cubs and was asked about his Opening Day roster. The eight-year manager said he’s still unsure how the roster will look once the games start to matter.

“There are things still to be determined. I think that our guys understand the landscape of our roster and how it can shake out. So, with that, there is an openness to playing left field, center field, second base… Miguel Rojas is a prime example. We have a good idea of how it’s going to shake out, but we have a lot of good players and things always do change so we’ve got to be open to that.”

The great thing about the Dodgers is that they have many players willing to play any position on the diamond. Chris Taylor is an excellent example of that, Gavin Lux has played multiple positions in his short career, and Miguel Vargas will be another example of doing all he can to help the team.

Second-time Dodger Miguel Rojas will play a crucial role for Los Angeles this season. Roberts says he expects the 34-year-old to play any position that is required of him.

“I do expect him to play some third base, I expect Miguel [Vargas] l to stay over there at second base. I expect him to play some short, some second, potentially even, I know he’s got a first base glove. The challenge for me is making sure I keep him relevant. He’s already got an openness just to stay on the baseball field and help in any way, so it’s up to me to figure out how I can give guys a day off to keep Miguel involved because I think he is additive.”

It’s great to get a sense of where guys will become in the regular season, and we’ll see how they do in the multiple positions they’re put in.

The Boys in Blue had Lux playing in left field when they needed him to, so if they can do that and still win games, they’ll be fine.
