Dodgers Injury News: Miguel Vargas Progressing, Roberts Provides Update

Dodgers skipper says Vargas will be limited time in spring training

The Los Angeles Dodgers started camp on the wrong side of things as their young prospect Miguel Vargas injured his right pinkie.

It was reported that Vargas took a ground ball off his pinkie finger, which resulted in a hairline fracture.

Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts gave our friends at Dodgers Nation an update on the 23-year-old.

“His grip strength is back to normal. So that was the biggest test to get that grip strength back. I assume with that he should be doing more stuff in the cage but when he swings in a game, I don’t know that answer yet.”

The good news is that Vargas has his grip back, and the not-so-good news is Vargas cannot swing the bat just yet.

The Cuban native started in LA’s first spring training game on Saturday and had only one AB in which he didn’t swing his bat.

Roberts was also asked how many at-bats he envisions Vargas getting through the remainder of exhibition games.

“I would say 40-50, but it doesn’t have to be in a game. We’ve done a good job at getting guys on the back fields so, he’ll get enough at-bats.”

Vargas will look to redeem himself after getting a limited role at the back end of the 2022 season. In 47 ABs in 2022, he slashed .170/.200/.255 with a .455 OPS. It wasn’t what Vargas or any of us Dodger fans expected from him, but he will get a chance and then some to show Dodger faithful why he’s the third-overall prospect in the team.

Things are not off to a good start for the youngster, but this injury isn’t too serious, and we can’t wait to see him out there raking.
