Dodgers News: David Peralta Talks About the New ‘Pizza Box’ Bases

LA outfielder makes a joke about the new base bags

Your Los Angeles Dodgers just played their first game of the 2023 campaign, and even though it was Spring Training, it was nice to see the Boys in Blue back on the diamond.

The Dodgers came up short against the Milwaukee Brewers, 7-4, and we got our first look at the new rule changes the MLB implemented for the 2023 season.

The pitch clock speeded up the game; the total game time was two hours and 21 minutes. Four total violations were made, but that shouldn’t be a surprise considering this is the first time each team got a taste of it in live action.

Another one of the changes was the bases. The bases went from 15 inches to 18 inches, and you can see the difference between them side by side.

The Dodgers newest infielder David Peralta was asked about the bases and compared the bags to ‘pizza boxes.’

“It’s more easy, to be honest, to hit the base because you don’t have to be worried too much when you hit the middle when you see the huge, extra large pizza box.”

Peralta is not the only one who thinks the new bags look like pizza boxes; last week, Red Sox manager Alex Cora also compared the new bags to pizza boxes.

The MLB hopes the new bases will result in more stolen bases, resulting in a more action-packed game. Another reason for the bigger bases is to reduce injuries when a player steals the base.

Peralta was signed by the Boys in Blue last Thursday to a one-year deal. He will get some starts out in left field while platooning with others throughout the season.

We’ll see how this season plays out and if we’ll see a new record of stolen bases in a year.

Pizza boxes or not, it’ll be fascinating to see the type of action we get in 2023.
