The Chargers have added another member to their coaching staff for the 2023 season.
The Chargers fired three coaches this offseason, and replaced them with the additions of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier and inside linebackers coach Jeff Howard.
However, after filling all three of the vacant positions, they’ve added one more member to the staff. The newest coach teaming up with Brandon Staley in Los Angeles is Robert Muschamp, who will serve as the defensive quality control coach. The news was first reported by Matt Zenitz of On3Sports.
Muschamp, the nephew of Will Muschamp and a former Auburn tight end, has previously worked at Georgia the last two years as the defensive quality control coach following a two-year stint at Tennessee as a graduate assistant after his playing career.
After a lackluster second half in the Wild Card Round against the Jaguars that ultimately led to the Chargers’ season coming to an end, changes to the coaching staff were inevitable. With the arrival of Muschamp, the Chargers will have four new voices on staff, two being on offense and two being on defense.
Staley and Georgia head coach Kirby Smart have a strong relationship with one another, and the Chargers recent draft picks from that program just further emphasize that bond. From offensive lineman Jamaree Salyer to tight end Tre’McKitty and defensive back Mark Webb, the Chargers have drafted three players from Georgia across Staley’s two years at the helm.
Last season, the Chargers defense allowed 22.6 points per game, ranking 22nd in the NFL. Meanwhile, Georgia’s National Championship defense held opponents to an average of 12.8 points per game, the second-best in the country.
Certainly, there will be a transition for Muschamp, making the jump to the NFL after spending the last eight years as a player and coach in the SEC. But for the Chargers to onboard a staff member from one of the most consistent college programs with a premier defense, it could serve as an interesting wrinkle for Staley’s defense as they look to reap the benefits of all the money they allocated to that side of the ball in free agency last year.
