Yasiel Puig Faces More Off-Field Charges With Recent Gambling Incident

Former Dodger faces two more charges via gambling case

Former Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star Yasiel Puig faces more off-the-field trouble. Puig faces two new charges in connection with an alleged sports gambling operation that was first reported last year.

The two federal charges are for making false statements and obstructing justice. If found guilty, Puig could face up to 10 years in prison.

The 32-year-old had pleaded guilty to lying to authorities about betting on sports through an illegal bookmaking ring in November 2022.

The former LA outfielder later withdrew his guilty plea, as the plea agreement meant a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison and a fine of at least $55,000.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, Puig lost $282,000 while placing bets on basketball, tennis, and football games.

The Cuban-born player was a member of the Boys in Blue for six seasons from 2013-2018 and, in his career, slashed .277/.348/.475 with .823 OPS while totaling 132 home runs and 415 RBIs.

He helped guide LA to back-to-back World Series appearances and brought an energy to Chavez Ravine that was much-needed.

Puig has spent the past couple of seasons playing professionally in different countries.

The former All-Star’s case is being closely watched as the MLB and FBI continue monitoring the situation and its severity.
