Dodgers Highlights: Miguel Rojas Begins Defense Training with Miguel Vargas

Dodgers prospect Miguel Vargas was seen working on defense with new LA acquisition Miguel Rojas, one of the best infield defenders in baseball.

Miguel Rojas is a Gold Glove finalist and one of the finest defensive infielders in baseball. Miguel Vargas is a top prospect with a bat that can’t miss but questions about his infield defense. Both Miguels are on the Dodgers, and both are based in South Florida in the offseason.

After Rojas was traded to the Dodgers recently, he said he’d already been in touch with Vargas about working on defense together. This week, we got our first video evidence of the collaboration.

That’s Vargas in the long-sleeve gray shirt with the bright green/yellow hat; Rojas is in the light-yellow shirt with the dark hat. They’re working out on the baseball field at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida, just outside of Fort Lauderdale.

Another video from late last week shows another Vargas workout, and this one is interesting for different reasons:

We heard from Andrew Friedman over the weekend that Vargas is likely to be the Dodgers’ second baseman, and in this video he’s clearly working on double play throws from the second base position to the shortstop. (And we can’t tell for sure, but that might be his father, Cuban baseball legend Lazaro Vargas, taking the feeds from him.)

Vargas is an outstanding athlete, and it’s great to see him working to improve his defense. It’s also wonderful to see Rojas helping him, a very unselfish move considering that Vargas struggling defensively would likely lead to more playing time for Rojas. It’s a team-first mentality, for sure.

Spring training is just a few weeks away, so we’ll get to see both Miggys in action soon enough.
