Dodgers: James Shields Brought to Tears By David Price’s Jersey Number

We love a good baseball bonding story. David Price chose number 33 for his jersey when he came over to the Dodgers earlier in February, and it was with good reason. Price wanted to honor his former teammate James Shields, who he became very close to in Tampa Bay.

In a phone interview with MLB Network, Shields broke down his reaction upon hearing why Price had chosen the number.

That’s one of the greatest honors a player could ever get, you know? And that’s David Price in a nutshell.

Price played in Tampa Bay from 2008 to 2013, and Shield was there 2006 to 2012. The two were quite the starting duo, as they put up over 150 wins together in their time with Tampa. Shields expressed how he was drawn to Price early on when he first arrived, and that his child-like spirit was always refreshing in the clubhouse. One can only hope that translates to the Dodgers’ clubhouse.

He had this really contagious spirit about him…he was such a little kid, and he still is to this day.

Upon learning that Price had chosen number 33 to honor him specifically, well…Shields was caught a little off guard.

He definitely brought me to tears, there’s no doubt about it. I called him and I’m like crying over the phone with him…he got me on that one.

David Price will be making his first Cactus League start for the Dodgers today in Goodyear against the Reds.
