Dodgers: Dustin May Discusses Starting Role for 2020 and More

For the first time, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Dustin May attended Fanfest. Of course as exciting as it is for the Dodger fanbase to hear this kid talk a little more, it must be equally exciting for may.

No longer is he the pitcher with no big league innings under his belt simply trying to earn a roster spot. Now, he will serve as a prominent role whether it be a fixture in the rotation or a lightning multi-inning reliever.

In listening to May talk, a few themes develop. Hearing what he has to say is very interesting, given that he will hold the ball in so many important spots in 2020.

First, May is asked if he’s been given an indication on what his true 2020 role will be between starting or relieving. Right now, he just looks for a spot to show what he can do.

“I honestly have no idea, but I know I’m reporting to Spring Training as a start. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to show what I’ve got.”

Next, May is asked what important lessons he learned as a rookie in 2019. Altogether, this is an important quote to file away. Truly, I believe May is a guy with a lot of confidence in his own stuff; and rightfully so.

“To learn that it’s feasible. I was very excited to get to MLB in 2019 and get my feet wet. To learn that I can get guys out, it was a big confidence boost. From pitching in the playoffs to now reporting to Spring Training, I’m in attack mode. The biggest thing I learned as a rookie was just to have confidence. That is the biggest thing, just to have confidence and conviction behind each pitch. Knowing that you’re able to get every guy out.”

Finally towards the end of the segment, May acknowledges that a pitcher can feed off the energy of the Los Angeles Dodger crowd at Chavez Ravine. He also says that he doesn’t take a different approach whether he be making a start or a relief appearance, the intensity on his part remains the same.

If he continues to pitch with confidence, and an attack mentality of getting every hitter out; I like what the future holds for the redheaded kid with big time stuff.
