Dodgers: Justin Turner Surpises War Veteran with Opening Day Honor

Justin Turner is one of the most active athletes in the Los Angeles local community considering his Southern California background that includes attendance at Cal State Fullerton and being born in Long Beach. Simply put, he is a great person, not just a great hitter.

The veteran third baseman met with Staff Sergeant Tarczy, a World War II veteran who calls Turner his favorite player.

Turner surprised the veteran not only with a visit, but also offered him the opportunity to be the “Military Hero of the Game” on opening day at Dodger Stadium this upcoming season.

This was a very cool gesture on behalf of the Los Angeles Dodgers and by Justin Turner for demonstrating their appreciation for the veterans of the Armed Forces.

Not to be lost in the festivities, the day JT was visiting Staff Sgt Tarczy happened to mark the one-year anniversary of “Justin Turner Day,” a day dedicated to the Long Beach native by the L.A. City Council (before they did that other thing).

Turner will be entering his age-35 season and has been such a welcome member of the Los Angeles community since he came over from the New York Mets in 2014. He has now become a star in Hollywood and one of the most recognizable faces in L.A. sports.
