In case you missed the major news bit, Rick Honeycutt retired as Los Angeles Dodgers pitching coach as soon as the season ended. Furthermore, Mark Prior will make the easy transition to head up the Dodgers’ staff in 2020.

While it’s a huge loss for the Dodgers in terms of a guy who has had a long and prominent run, the news with Honeycutt doesn’t quite end there.
Per a press release from WDEF.com, Honeycutt will be honored in January at a Toast of Champions event in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

LA Dodgers’ Rick Honeycutt will be the honoree for the Classic 150’s Toast of Champions. Among the first to be announced as a speaker will be former MLB pitcher and broadcaster Orel Hershiser. The annual fundraising event will be held on January 21st at the Chattanooga Trade and Convention Center with more surprises to come.
Equally important, the Classic 150’s President has this to say about Honeycutt; and why he was selected to be the keynote speaker on that evening.
“We’ve all followed Rick’s career from the time he became an All-American first baseman pitcher at UT until his current position with the LA Dodgers. Rick pitched in the MLB for six different teams over 21 years and pitched in 30 post-season games, including 30 League Championship Series games. He never lost a game and was a member of the Oakland Athletics’ 1989 World Series championship team. We’re proud to honor his career and welcome him back home.”
Obviously, this is great to see. Over the course of time, you stumble across solid baseball guys and legendary ones. Without question, Honeycutt falls into that category of individuals who you would be lucky to just have a short conversation with to pick his brain about his experiences. Imagine the stories or knowledge he could impart if he had a little bit of time.
Honeycutt’s success not only with the Dodgers – but across his baseball career – spans several decades. He’s worked with some of the greatest players in the game’s history and had success. We were happy to learn he’s going to be honored on January 21st.
