Dodgers Have Reportedly Inquired on All-Star Reliever Josh Hader

The Dodgers are among the teams who have inquired on Brewers star left-handed relief pitcher Josh Hader, according to Ken Rosenthal.

The Yankees and Mets are also interested, with the Yankees being the most aggressive club in their pursuit of Hader. However, Rosenthal reports a deal with any club is unlikely due to the Brewers’ high asking price.

In some cases, sources say the Brewers asked for a package that included at least one top prospect. Teams, however, are hesitant to part with such an asset for a reliever, even one as good as Hader.

The cost for Hader should be high, as the Brewers know well. He has won the Trevor Hoffman Award as the top reliever in the National League for the past two seasons and is only 25 years old.

He is projected to make $4.6 million this season and has four years of team control left before becoming eligible for free agency in 2024.

Hader’s home run rate jumped by 7%, from 14.5% to 21.4%, from 2018 to 2019. He was able to still remain at an elite level, but it is cause for concern moving forward. Hader was able to counter the home run problem by striking out more hitters and walking less.

Teams are also concerned with the number of innings Hader has thrown in the past two seasons, according to Rosenthal.

Some clubs, though, are concerned by his workload. Over the past two seasons, Hader has thrown 168 innings, including playoffs, second only to Yusmeiro Petit among pitchers used solely as relievers.

It is hard to envision the Dodgers including Gavin Lux, Dustin May, or Keibert Ruiz in a trade for a reliever. Perhaps the Brewers would have interest in a deal involving a starting pitcher, such as Kenta Maeda or Ross Stripling since they need rotation help.

It is unknown if the Dodgers’ interest in Hader came before or after their signing of Blake Treinen to a one-year deal.
