Dodgers News: Rule 5 Draft Order Announced for Thursday

At the Winter Meetings every season, the Rule 5 Draft takes place. Teams who need to fill out their roster take pieces from other teams in an effort to strengthen their own. This season, the Dodgers will be selecting 29th in the draft, but more likely than not, they will be selecting nobody at all. One of the integral aspects of the Rule 5 Draft is that teams do not have to select a player to place on their 40-man roster if they do not wish.

Last season, the Dodgers lost infielder Connor Joe to the San Francisco Giants and infielder/outfielder Drew Jackson to the Seattle Mariners. This season, more likely than not, the Dodgers will be losing relief prospect, right-hander Jordan Sheffield. And possibly infielder Cristian Santana.

The flame-throwing Sheffield has been viewed as a potential backend of the bullpen piece for some time but has had trouble throwing strikes in the minor leagues. Santana has some pop, but has struggled with defense and getting on base.

The Rule 5 Draft will take place at the Winter Meetings on Thursday night in San Diego so we should know soon after who will be taken out of the Dodgers organization.

Another key aspect of the Rule 5 Draft is that if the team who selects the player opts to designate them for assignment, they are then transferred back to their original team. For example, Connor Joe was returned to the Dodgers after the Giants DFA’d the outfielder early in April 2019.

Listen out for news and rumors in the coming days regarding which of the Dodgers’ pieces could be in danger of heading to another system.
