Dodgers Re-Sign Catcher Rocky Gale

The Dodgers have agreed to a minor league deal with catcher Rocky Gale, according to Chris Cotillo of Mass Live.

Gale spent time in the Dodgers organization in both 2018 and 2019, making five major league appearances for the club last season.

Gale has not spent a ton of time in the major leagues, registering just 37 plate appearances, but he does represent a strong minor league asset due to his work behind the dish. He has been given rave reviews by the front office and major league coaching staff due to his excellent framing ability, game calling expertise, and his strong ability to work with younger pitchers.

The 31-year-old catcher was drafted in the 24th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres. He made his major league debut with the Padres back in 2015 when he appeared in a total of ten games.

Gale is a well below average bat, but he has the glove. Offensively, Gale has mustered just a .108/.108/.189 slash line in the major leagues — that will not get it done.

Gale is simply a depth piece due to the Dodgers’ current plethora of backstop options with Will Smith poised to be the 2020 Opening Day starter, Austin Barnes as the backup, and Keibert Ruiz waiting in the wings.
