Dodgers Scout Identified as Pirates GM Target

The Pittsburgh Pirates are in need of a general manager and according to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a Dodgers’ scout could be a target for them.

The scout drawing interest is Jeff McAvoy, who was hired by the Dodgers on Jan. 29, 2018 after being fired by Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter.

McAvoy’s worked as the Vice President of Player Personnel for the Marlins and was under contract with them through 2020 for at least $3 million per year, according to the Sun Sentinel.

Here is what Mackey wrote in his article titled, “Here are some names to know as the Pirates search for a GM.”

Usually, it might be a fool’s errand to predict someone going from the Dodgers to the Pirates, but McAvoy worked for Andrew Friedman in Tampa and actually had small-market experience. … Was ironically in charge of scouting and eventually acquiring Chris Archer. … While the Dodgers couldn’t be more different from the Pirates from a financial perspective, McAvoy could help them fix their developmental and player-identification issues.

In an article for The Athletic, Peter Gammons said McAvoy has been a top advisor for Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman going back to their time with the Rays.

With the Rays, Friedman went with McAvoy’s scouting opinions when Tampa was sending Matt Garza to the Cubs. Chris Archer and Robinson Chirinos were McAvoy suggestions; Archer obviously worked out in a big way, and after some injury setbacks, Chirinos has become a frontline catcher, handling one of the game’s best staffs in Houston.

Dodgers personnel continue to be at the top of the list for front office needy teams. It would be less than ideal for Friedman and the Dodgers to lose a trusted scout, but it is something they can overcome.
