Dodgers Tony Gonsolin Preparing for Starting and Bullpen Roles for Possible Postseason Roles

Before the Dodgers kicked off their final game with the Colorado Rockies on Fan Appreciation Day, Dodgers Rookie Pitcher, Tony Gonsolin, sat down with Alanna Rizzo and San Jose Shark Scout, Ned Colletti to talk about his possible role with the team in the post-season.

To even Tony’s surprise, he’s being given serious consideration for the postseason. In recent weeks, the Dodgers have been giving him opportunities to come out of the bullpen after beginning him as a starting pitcher when he first came up to the big leagues.

Now with the Dodgers dealing with injuries to Rich Hill and the inconsistencies of Kenley Jansen, Gonsolin seems primed to be the pitcher that can give the Dodgers the flexibility needed to survive in the post-season. Since his return in late July, Gonsolin’s throw 37 innings with a 3.16 ERA and 33 strikeouts.

Gonsolin told Alanna Rizzo that he’s got his routine down as a starter and it really shows allowing only a .192 average to opposing hitters. Tony admitted that he’s still working on his routine as a bullpen pitcher, but his .182 average to opposing hitters shows that he might already be ready.

That’s what the Dodgers are hoping for. The real key is to see how Rich Hill performs this Tuesday vs. the Padres to better understand how Gonsolin is going to be used.
