Here is a name you probably have not heard in months: Scott Alexander. The 30-year-old lefty specialist underwent surgery to repair some nerve issues in his left hand.

Alexander last pitched for the Dodgers on June 5 before going down with various injuries. It is great to hear that the issue has been addressed via surgery. Although we do not know an official timetable on Alexander’s return, it is fair to expect him to miss a chunk of the 2020 season due to the serious nature of the procedure.

Alexander was traded to the Dodgers from the Kansas City Royals for prospect Trevor Oaks in a three-team deal. At the time of the deal, people were championing the under-the-radar move because of Alexander’s ground ball rate and excellent sinker. Alexander still has the makings of being a solid lefty specialist down the road for the Dodgers, but a fair assessment can only be made after he returns, obviously.

Alexander threw 17 1/3 innings for the Dodgers before going down, posting a 3.63 ERA and 5.05 FIP with an elite 61.1 percent ground ball rate. In 2018 with Los Angeles, Alexander posted a 3.31 xFIP and at times, was the Dodgers’ best left-handed relief option.
