Kawhi Leonard knows the Clippers are playing well, but they can play better.
The LA Clippers are entering the NBA All-Star break as the fourth seed and on a two-game winning streak. They’ve won four of the last six games and are five games over .500, but that’s not a level of play that satisfies Kawhi Leonard.
The Clippers were expected to be a championship contender, and to be only five games about .500 at the All-Star break is far from that. Kawhi Leonard knows that’s the truth, and fully expects the team to get better in this final stretch of games.
“We still got to get better,” Kawhi said to the media. “I don’t think we’re playing at a championship level yet but we’re gradually getting better and we got to keep getting better.”
The state of the Clippers was perhaps best described by Kenny Smith on Inside the NBA.
“They’re a 5th seed, but they should be 2 seed,” Smith said.
Yes, the Clippers are only one game out of the third seed, but they’re also two games out of the seventh seed. This is a team that should have been as comfortable in the standings as the Denver Nuggets currently are. There were a handful of injuries, but also a handful of movements the Clippers just blew. For those reasons, Kawhi Leonard has a very realistic answer about the Clippers’ championship goals. When will he be satisfied? Only time will tell.
“We’ll see when it happens. It’s a feel that you have. It’s hard to explain.”
