In what is expected to be a historic night in Los Angeles, LeBron James is just 36 points away from passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most points in NBA history. There were some who speculated that James may attempt to break the record on Thursday vs. the Milwaukee Bucks, but the stage has seemingly been set for the Lakers star to break the record tonight against the OKC Thunder.

In a live television report from ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, it was revealed that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is expected to be in attendance, along with several of LeBron’s family and friends from Akron, Ohio. In addition to this crowd, LA Clippers head coach Ty Lue will also be in attendance, having a relationship with James from their time together with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Lue had previously mentioned wanting to be in the building when James broke the record, and McMenamin reported that Lue confirmed via text message that he will indeed be in attendance.

With the Clippers off tonight, the timing worked out well for Ty Lue. He and James teamed up for Cleveland’s first championship in 2016, and made three-straight NBA Finals trips together. There is a lot of mutual respect between LeBron and coach Lue, and it is great that Lue will have an opportunity to be in the building when James breaks the record.

Needing 36 points to pass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James will only need six more points than his season average to make it happen.
