Khalil Mack’s Sensational Six Sacks Performance Revives Chargers’ Defense
Veteran Linebacker Dominates Former Team, Drawing Comparisons to NFL Greats
Entering Week 4 of the 2023 NFL season, Khalil Mack, the seasoned linebacker of the Los Angeles Chargers, hadn’t recorded a single sack. His slow start in his second year with the team raised concerns among fans and coaches alike. However, everything turned around dramatically in the most recent game.
Against his former team, the Las Vegas Raiders, Mack unleashed an astounding performance, registering six sacks. This breathtaking display served as a stark reminder to everyone why he is considered one of the premier defensive players in the league.
Head coach Brandon Staley was quick to praise Mack’s outstanding performance, even suggesting that Mack deserves the same Hall of Fame consideration as other top veteran edge rushers. Staley drew a compelling comparison between Khalil Mack and star edge rusher Von Miller. Miller, who entered the league in 2011, has amassed an impressive 123.5 career sacks in 161 games played. His accolades include winning the Defensive Rookie of the Year award and earning three All-Pro 1st Team selections.
In contrast, Mack began his NFL journey in 2014 and has notched 90.5 career sacks to date. While Mack missed out on the Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 2014, he did achieve the pinnacle by winning the Defensive Player of the Year in 2016 while with the then-Oakland Raiders. Mack has also earned All-Pro First Team honors three times in his career.
“I just know that if Von’s a Hall of Famer, Khalil Mack’s a Hall of Famer,” Staley says. “That’s just the easiest comparison. If Von’s going in the Hall first ballot, so is Khalil.”

Despite Mack trailing slightly in counting statistics, it’s worth noting that he is two years younger than Miller. This age difference could factor into the equation of longevity, and if Mack continues to deliver strong performances in the coming years, he might surpass Miller’s current sack totals.
