Los Angeles Chargers Trade J.C. Jackson Back to New England Patriots in Surprising Move
Cornerback Returns to Patriots in Late-Round Draft Pick Swap
In a surprising early-season trade, the Los Angeles Chargers have parted ways with cornerback J.C. Jackson, sending him back to the New England Patriots. This move comes as a swap of late-round draft picks, reshaping the roster for both teams.
J.C. Jackson, once a high-priced free agent acquisition for the Chargers two seasons ago, struggled to make a significant impact due to injuries that plagued him throughout the previous season. His limited appearances on the field hindered his ability to showcase his skills, leading to a decline in his standing within the team.
Even in the current season, Jackson’s role with the Chargers remained uncertain, with the team designating him as a healthy scratch in week three and keeping him on the sidelines during week four. So far, he has played in just two games, contributing three tackles and securing one interception.
Jackson’s return to New England marks a reunion with the franchise where he initially gained recognition as one of the league’s premier cornerbacks. During his previous stint with the Patriots, he amassed an impressive 17 interceptions over a two-year period, a performance that ultimately earned him a lucrative contract with the Chargers in the open market.
Remarkably, the Chargers will continue to bear the majority of Jackson’s $12 million salary for the remainder of this season. As he is currently in the second year of a five-year deal worth $82.5 million, this trade allows the Chargers to alleviate some of their financial burdens. It’s a prudent move for the Chargers, especially considering their recent reluctance to field Jackson.
However, this trade does leave a void in the Chargers’ secondary, which has already struggled against opposing wide receivers this season. The loss of a seasoned player like Jackson has depleted their depth in the defense. Consequently, the Chargers will need to swiftly address this gap, either through another trade or potentially signing a free agent. It’s imperative that they bolster their secondary to fortify their defensive capabilities moving forward.
