Report: Chargers Conduct Interview With Raiders’ Fred Walker For Quarterbacks Coach Opening

The Chargers have reportedly held an interview for their vacant quarterbacks coach position.

The Chargers filled their vacant offensive coordinator position with the hiring of Kellen Moore almost two weeks ago. Now, the team is looking to onboard their next quarterbacks coach, working alongside Moore and the rest of the offensive staff.

On Friday, the Chargers interviewed Raiders offensive assistant Fred Walker for their quarterbacks coach opening, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Last season marked Walker’s first year as an NFL coach, joining Josh McDaniel’s staff in Las Vegas. Before taking the leap into the NFL, he served as the quarterbacks coach at the University of Massachusetts, following a variety of different coaching roles at Duke, Mississippi State, Murray State, Tennessee Tech and Troy.

Walker joined Duke as an offensive assistant in 2018, with a main focus of working with quarterbacks. He helped guide Daniel Jones in posting career highs in touchdown passes and QB rating, which ultimately led him in becoming the No. 8 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the New York Giants.

If Walker does indeed get the job, he’ll work hands on with quarterbacks Justin Herbert in an effort to lift the offense to greater heights under the new scheme Moore is bringing over from his time calling plays for the Dallas Cowboys.

Walker is the first reported candidate to interview for the Chargers quarterbacks coach position during this year’s hiring cycle.
